Young at Heart is the perfect phrase to describe ARC seniors. For ARC senior citizens, retirement years herald a time of exploration and creativity. This is the season to begin a new hobby - or engage in a much loved pastime. The senior years offer the perfect opportunity to dabble in the arts, study something new, reunite with friends.
"This is the time to stop and smell the roses. At ARC of Rockland, every day is a bouquet."
Senior Center
ARC's spacious and lovely Senior Center is located at ARC Headquarters in Congers. Here men and women choose from a range of activities as they solidify friendships and socialize. Music, art, crafts, exercise, dance, gardening and cooking are among the ways in which senior citizens keep in the swing of things.
Out and About
ARC Seniors spend time in the community. Trips to sites of historical or recreational interest are an important aspect of the day. Visits to senior organizations throughout the county expand horizons.
Visiting Dignitaries
Visitors from local schools and organizations are frequent guests at ARC's Senior Center.
"Local musicians, singers and dancers make regular appearances." Volunteerism
The senior years are years during which there is time to volunteer. ARC seniors enjoy donating hand made quilts and other items to worthy organizations. Children, the infirm and veterans are among the recipients of ARC seniors' spirit of volunteerism.
Health Care
Physical and occupational therapies are available for those who need assistance in maintaining mobility and performing the activities of daily living.
"A top notch nursing staff monitors nutrition, exercise and medication on an individual basis."
Food for Thought
The ARC Senior Center kitchen is always a bustle of activity as seniors try out new recipes and enjoy the sense of togetherness that comes from sharing a meal with friends.
Laughter
It has been said that laughter is the best medicine. ARC Seniors can attest to that fact!
"Bowling parities, holiday parties, sing-alongs--bring out the smiles."
Self-advocacy
Seniors speak for themselves and for other people with developmental disabilities during meetings designed to bolster self confidence while making an impact on the future. Decisions regarding Senior Center activities and events reflect serious deliberation on the part of the participants.
"As the seniors know well--speaking up gets results."
